Getting started

How do I install SnippyText?

Download the installer from this site and run it. You don't need admin rights or a separate .NET install. Once installed, the app's icon appears in the tray by the clock.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. What should I do?

Windows does this for new apps that few people have downloaded yet. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”. Your browser may warn about the file too. In that case open the downloads list and choose “Download suspicious file”.

Which Windows versions are supported?

Windows 10 and Windows 11.

How do I open the app?

Double-click the tray icon to open the snippet manager. Right-clicking the icon opens a menu with every action: quick paste, settings, updates and more.

How do I change the app's language?

Settings, the General section, language. Ukrainian, English and Russian are available. The new language applies after the app restarts.

Snippets and abbreviations

How do I create a snippet?

In the manager click “+ New”, enter a name and the text, and optionally an abbreviation and a folder. Then click “Save” or press Ctrl+S.

What makes a good abbreviation?

Start it with a symbol such as ; or / and leave out spaces: ;sig, ;adr, /thx. That way it won't fire by accident in ordinary text.

Do abbreviations work with another keyboard layout on?

Yes, they fire on the same physical keys. If that gets in the way, turn it off in Settings, the Abbreviations section.

How do I paste a snippet if I forget its abbreviation?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Space and start typing the name or part of the text. Search copes with the wrong keyboard layout and small typos. You can also turn on suggestions as you type: Settings, Abbreviations, Suggestions. Tab then inserts the suggested snippet.

What are variables in snippets?

They are words in curly braces that the app replaces when pasting. For example, {date} becomes today's date, {clipboard} the clipboard contents, {cursor} marks where the cursor ends up, and {input:Name} asks you for a value before pasting. The full list sits under the text box in the manager.

How do I give a snippet a hotkey?

In the manager right-click the snippet and choose “Assign a hotkey…”. The combo can include a mouse button. A hotkey assigned to a folder opens a menu of its snippets right at the cursor.

Can snippets include images, tables and files?

Yes. The “Large text” format has a visual editor with images, tables and links, and you can attach files to any snippet. On Windows 10 the visual editor may need the free Microsoft Edge WebView2 component.

How do I check text for mistakes?

Put the cursor in a text box, or select the part you want, and press Ctrl+Alt+G. A window opens with the mistakes highlighted and explanations and fixes beside them. Click “Fix all”, then “Insert”, and the corrected text goes back in place. Checking works in Ukrainian, Russian and English. You can change the key in the settings, under “Error check”.

What checks the text, and where is it sent?

By default the free online service LanguageTool checks the text. Under “Error check” you can pick Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT instead, with your own API key; the key is stored encrypted on your computer. Only the text you choose to check is sent, and the app asks your permission before the first check.

Data, backups and sync

Where are my snippets stored?

Only on your computer, and we never see them. To open their folder, use “Open the data folder” in the tray menu.

How do I move my license to a new computer?

A key works on 2 computers. If the old one still works, open “License…” in the tray menu there and click “Release this computer”, then enter the key on the new one. If the old one is gone, enter the key on the new computer: the app offers to send an email to the address the license was issued to. Click Move in that email and the app activates by itself. Moving by email works once every 30 days; if you need it more often, write to us.

How do I move my snippets to a new computer?

Settings, Data and backups, “Save a backup…”. Copy the file to the new computer and choose “Restore from a backup…” there. This carries over snippets, folders, settings, hotkeys and attached files.

How do I keep the same snippets on several computers?

Settings, Sync and updates, “Data folder…”, and pick a OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive folder. Point the second computer at the same folder. Don't run the app on both computers at the same time.

I deleted a snippet by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes. Deleted snippets go to the trash, the “Trash…” button in the manager. Right after deleting, Ctrl+Z works too.

Can I bring snippets in from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Save the spreadsheet as CSV with the columns abbreviation, text, name, folder. Then go to Settings, Data and backups, “Import…”. The app detects the separator itself and leaves your existing snippets alone.

Troubleshooting

An abbreviation doesn't work in one app

If that app runs as administrator, run SnippyText as administrator too. Also check it isn't in the exceptions list: Settings, Abbreviations, “Where abbreviations work”. And make sure “Expand abbreviations” is ticked in the tray menu.

A hotkey doesn't work

Another app or Windows itself may already use that combo, so try a different one. Hotkeys are paused while the Hotkeys or Settings window is open.

A copied image vanished from the clipboard after pasting

The app pastes through the clipboard and then puts the previous text back. It can't restore an image or file that was on the clipboard.

Formatting is lost when pasting

Some boxes, such as many chat apps, accept plain text only. Word, Outlook and email services keep the formatting.

Updates and license

How do I update the app?

The app checks for a new version once a day and offers to update. Your snippets stay as they are. To check by hand, go to Help, “Check for updates…”.

How do I see which version I have?

Help, About.

What happens after the 14-day trial?

The app asks for a license key. Your snippets don't go anywhere. Everything about buying is on the Pricing page.

How do I uninstall the app?

Windows Settings, Apps, Installed apps, find SnippyText and click Uninstall. If you'll need your snippets later, save a backup first.
